Daylight, water temperature, insect activity, river level and local access all influence the day. These are useful planning guidelines rather than guarantees.
In April, the most productive activity is often concentrated between late morning and late afternoon. May and June can offer activity throughout the day, with increasingly useful evening fishing.
July, August and September can fish throughout the day, although shortening daylight gradually reduces evening opportunities. October access and seasons are more limited and depend on the fishery.
Grayling opportunities can exist across all twelve months where local rules and access allow. April into May is commonly treated with care because fish may be spawning; winter grayling can provide excellent sport.
Wherever possible, Best Fishing Scotland uses private or exclusive trout and grayling water with wild fish, few anglers and low fishing pressure. Permits, tackle, flies, waders and a dedicated guide can all be arranged.
