Fishing & permits
Suitable water and the required permission arranged around your dates.
Arrive with your travel plans—not a working knowledge of Scottish permits, rivers and tackle. Bill can coordinate a private fishing day or multi-day itinerary around your dates and experience.

“My daughter, husband and I came from the USA to fish the Tweed. The waders, boots, rods and flies were excellent. We each caught fish—three different species—and I learned Euro-nymphing!”
Kathleen Lynch — USA

No. Scottish fishing depends on weather, water and wild fish movement. Bill recommends realistic options but never promises a catch.
Travelling from the United States or Canada should not mean solving Scottish permits, tackle, transport and river choices by yourself. Tell us where you are staying, your dates, experience and target species; we will suggest a realistic private fishing plan for the season.
Edinburgh and Glasgow are the principal international gateways for many trips, with rail and road connections to fishing areas across central and southern Scotland. Inverness can suit some Highland itineraries. Travel time depends on the water selected, so confirm your accommodation base with us before making fixed daily plans.
Driving is on the left and rural journey times can be longer than the mileage suggests. If you do not wish to drive, ask about pickup or transport options when enquiring. Availability and cost will be confirmed as part of your proposal.
Scotland does not use one general rod licence in the same way as many North American destinations. Permission or a permit for the particular fishery is still required, and salmon fishing is closely managed by season and river. We arrange the appropriate access for an agreed guided day and explain the local rules before fishing.
Catch-and-release requirements vary by river, species and time of year. Your guide will explain current conservation measures, safe fish handling and biosecurity. We never promise a catch; water, weather and fish movement remain part of wild fishing.
Rods, reels, lines, flies, waders and boots can be arranged, so most overseas guests do not need to fly with specialist equipment. Send each angler's height, approximate build and US or Canadian shoe size in advance so suitable clothing can be prepared.
Scottish weather can change quickly. Bring warm layers, waterproof outerwear, a hat, sunglasses and comfortable clothes that can be worn under waders. We provide a trip-specific packing note once the water and season are confirmed.
Salmon, sea trout, brown trout and grayling opportunities vary throughout the year and between river systems. Share your travel window and priorities and we will recommend suitable waters, with honest alternatives if conditions change.
Beginners are welcome, as are experienced anglers wanting local knowledge or casting support. Trips can range from one private day to a multi-day itinerary combining species, rivers and sightseeing.
Partners and family members do not have to fish every day. We can help shape an itinerary around castles, whisky, golf, food, walking and historic towns while keeping travel practical for fishing days. Tell us how many anglers and non-anglers are travelling and which interests matter most.
Quotes are provided in pounds sterling and set out the agreed guiding, water, permits, equipment and any transport. Your proposal will explain the deposit, balance date and cancellation terms before you commit. Tipping is appreciated for excellent service but is discretionary.
Arrival day: check in, recover from travel and review the plan. Fishing days: meet your guide, receive equipment and a safety briefing, then fish the best agreed option for current conditions. Flexible day: reserve time for a second species, another river or touring with non-angling companions.
The exact sequence should remain flexible because Scottish conditions can change. We confirm practical meeting details before each day.
Send your travel dates or month, accommodation base, party size, experience, target species and any equipment or transport needs. We normally reply within two working days with questions or the next planning step.

Bill Drew’s guidance draws on fishing in several US states and working with more than 2,000 visiting American clients over 27 years.
Scotland has no single state fishing licence, but anglers cannot simply stop beside a river and begin fishing. Rights are managed by the owner, beat, fishery or club, and permits should be arranged before arrival.
Scottish river guiding is generally not based around mixed drift-boat groups. Private beats restrict rod numbers, and the service is commonly one guide working only with one party—often no more than two anglers per guide.
Although permission must be organised, suitable fishing is widespread and private water can be remarkably uncrowded. Think of booking a particular room for a date rather than arriving at an open stream and hoping space is available.
Rods, reels, lines, flies, waders, boots and permits can be ready for you. Salmon access is particularly limited and expensive, and there is no salmon fishing on Sundays in most of Scotland, so dates should be planned carefully.
