Planning and booking

Planning Your Guided Fishing Day

01How far in advance should I book a fishing trip in Scotland?

Availability depends on the river, beat, guide and season. Popular dates and private water can be reserved several months ahead, so early contact gives Bill more realistic options. Short-notice enquiries are still welcome.

02What information should I include in my enquiry?

Share your preferred dates, party size, experience, target species, where you are staying and whether you need equipment or transport guidance. If your plans are flexible, say so—the extra choice can help when matching suitable water.

03Can I request a particular fishing guide?

Yes. Named-guide requests are welcome and subject to location and availability. If that guide is unavailable, Bill can explain the alternatives and recommend someone with suitable regional or species experience.

04Can you customise fishing near where I am staying?

Often, yes. Best Fishing Scotland works across several regions. Send your accommodation base and dates so realistic journey times, guide availability and suitable water can be considered together.

05Can you arrange a multi-day fishing itinerary?

Yes. An enquiry can cover several fishing days, different species or more than one region. The proposed water, guides, equipment, travel expectations and written quotation should be agreed before confirmation.

Equipment and tuition

What Is Included and Who Can Take Part?

06Do you supply fishing tackle, waders and boots?

Best Fishing Scotland can provide suitable rods, reels, lines, flies, waders and boots where required. Include clothing and shoe sizes in your enquiry so availability and suitability can be checked before the day.

07Are fishing permits or licences arranged?

The necessary permission or permit for the agreed water can be arranged as part of the guided day. Inclusions vary by proposal, so check the written quotation before confirming.

08Can complete beginners book a guided fishing day?

Yes. Beginners are welcome. Tuition can cover safe wading, casting, river awareness, fish handling and the method appropriate to the water. The pace is adjusted to the guest rather than following a fixed lesson.

09Can families and young people take part?

Family sessions can be planned around ages, confidence and suitable water. Tell Bill the ages of younger guests and any swimming, mobility or equipment considerations so the day can be assessed properly.

10What should I wear for a Scottish fishing day?

Bring adaptable layers and waterproof outer clothing suitable for changing Scottish weather. Avoid relying on one heavy layer. Final footwear and wading guidance will depend on the agreed water and supplied equipment.

Species and seasons

What Can You Fish For in Scotland?

11Which species can I target?

Trips may target Atlantic salmon, sea trout, wild brown trout or grayling, depending on the season, water conditions and availability. Stillwater fishing may sometimes offer a practical alternative.

12When is the best time for brown trout and grayling?

Brown trout fishing is generally associated with the spring-to-autumn season, while grayling can extend opportunities into colder months. Exact dates, rules and conditions vary by fishery and should be checked for the proposed water.

13When is the best time for Atlantic salmon and sea trout?

Productive periods vary considerably between rivers and through the season. Send your dates rather than relying on a single national “best month”; Bill can then discuss realistic species and river options.

14Can you guarantee that I will catch a fish?

No responsible guide can guarantee a wild fish. The day is planned around suitable water and conditions, but weather, river levels and fish behaviour remain outside anyone’s control. Tuition, location and the overall experience remain important parts of the day.

15What happens if conditions are unsuitable?

Conditions are reviewed as the date approaches. If the intended water is unsuitable, Bill will discuss any realistic alternative, change of method or other practical option available under the agreed booking terms.

Travel and accommodation

Planning From the UK or Overseas

16Can I visit without travelling with fishing equipment?

Yes. Equipment can be arranged, making this practical for visitors from the USA, Canada and elsewhere. Send your sizes, preferred method and experience when enquiring.

17How far is the fishing from Edinburgh or Glasgow?

Journey times vary with the chosen river and accommodation. Some commonly used waters may be around 45–120 minutes from Edinburgh or Glasgow, but the correct route and meeting point should be confirmed for your particular day.

18Can you help with accommodation?

Best Fishing Scotland can suggest hotels, inns, lodges and private properties that suit the fishing region and party. Accommodation is subject to its own availability and booking arrangement.

19Can you help with transport?

Bill can provide practical travel guidance and recommend suitable transport providers where needed. Confirm whether transfers are included or booked separately before payment.

20Can accommodation provide early breakfasts or packed lunches?

Many fishing-friendly properties can arrange early breakfast or packed lunch options with notice. This depends on the property, so dietary requirements and timings should be raised during planning.
