What can first-hand guide experience add to official river information?
Short answer: Official sources explain law, seasons and conservation; field experience helps translate dates and maps into a workable day. Bill Drew has fished for more than six decades and has arranged guided fishing since 1999. His recurring advice is to choose the water around the guest, conditions and travel—not the fame of a river name.
The right water is personal
A guest’s date, target species, casting background and mobility should be known before a beat is proposed. Some anglers want challenging double-handed casting; others need secure banks and patient tuition. A famous river can still be the wrong day if the water, access or travel does not fit.
“Start with the person and the conditions. The river name comes after that.”
Bill Drew, field note reviewed 15 August 2026
Private or lightly fished water changes the experience
Where possible, Best Fishing Scotland seeks private, exclusive or restricted-access river locations. On some days a guest may see few or no other anglers. This can improve tranquillity and teaching space, but it does not make wild fish predictable.
Some salmon and sea-trout locations can be booked for exclusive use, subject to availability and fishery terms. Limited water should be requested early rather than described as guaranteed.
Visiting anglers bring skills—but Scottish systems differ
Bill has fished in California, Oregon, Utah, Colorado and Montana and has worked with more than 2,000 visiting American clients over 27 years. North American anglers may recognise two-handed rods and swung flies, but Scottish beat organisation, access, ghillie traditions and line systems can still feel different.
Explain your normal rod, line and methods. A guide can build from that experience without expecting you to abandon familiar skills.
Pack layers and measurements, not every piece of tackle
- Several thin layers that can be added or removed.
- Breathable trousers and a waterproof jacket.
- Polarised eye protection and a brimmed hat.
- Spare warm socks and dry clothing.
- Accurate height, waist and shoe size if equipment is supplied.
- Clean, fully dry or appropriately disinfected personal tackle.
Rods, reels, lines, flies, waders and boots can be arranged. Ask before paying airline charges for redundant equipment.
Choose a base after locating the fishing
| Base | Field-planning use | Caution |
|---|---|---|
| Edinburgh | Tweed and Scottish Borders routes | City traffic and festival demand |
| Perth | Tay system and gateway north | Confirm the actual beat within a large catchment |
| Aberdeen | Compare Dee, Don and Deveron | Each river and meeting point has different travel |
| Inverness/Speyside | Ness, Spey and northern routes | “Highlands” distances can be deceptive |
| Skye | Dedicated scenic touring | Busy roads and scarce rooms require time |
A guide’s job includes changing the plan
Rain, heat or river height can undermine a booking made months earlier. The professional response is not to pretend the original pool remains ideal. It is to assess another section, water or activity, within permission and availability.
A guest should know before booking how condition changes are handled. Flexibility improves resilience but cannot create vacant prime fishing at the last minute.
Teach the next useful skill
A beginner needs a stable cast, safe line management and confidence—not a performance of every technique. An experienced angler may gain more from presentation, mending or a small timing change. The guide should diagnose what makes the next cast more effective.
Best Fishing Scotland’s team includes guides with backgrounds across salmon, trout and grayling water, enabling the organiser to match teaching style and regional knowledge.
Measure the day without promising a fish
Wild salmon and trout cannot be guaranteed. A responsible day provides legal access, suitable equipment, thoughtful tuition and the best practical decision for the conditions. A fish can turn a good day into an unforgettable one, but it cannot be written into honest marketing as an outcome.
How these notes are kept separate from rules
Experience statements on this page identify their source and review date. Legal or biological claims link to public authorities below. When a season, conservation grade or code changes, the official source takes priority and the site should be reviewed.
