A different system, clearly explained

What visiting anglers should know

Scotland does not use a single state-style fishing licence. Access belongs to a fishery, club, estate or beat and must be arranged for the particular water. Your proposal confirms the correct permission and local rules.

  • Permission, not one licenceYou cannot simply stop at a river and fish; named access is arranged first.
  • Private guidingYour guide normally works only with your party, not a mixed public group.
  • Restricted rod numbersSalmon beats limit daily rods, making early enquiries worthwhile.
  • Conservation firstCurrent catch-and-release, biosecurity and fish-handling rules are explained.

Local detail, handled before arrival

“My daughter, husband and I came from the USA to fish the Tweed. The waders, boots, rods and flies were excellent. We each caught fish—three different species—and I learned Euro-nymphing!”

International trip questions

USA & Canada visitor FAQs

Send any flight, accommodation or sizing questions with your enquiry and Bill will advise.

View all fishing FAQs →
Do I need to bring fishing equipment?

No. Suitable rods, reels, lines, flies, waders and boots can be arranged. Send sizing details in advance.

Do I need a Scottish fishing licence?

There is no single state-style licence. Permission for the named fishery, club or beat is required and can be arranged with your trip.

Can you help with accommodation and transport?

We can provide practical recommendations and meeting guidance. Your proposal confirms whether any transport is included.

Can non-angling partners be considered?

Yes. Fishing days can be planned around castles, golf, whisky, walking, food and other interests where travel remains practical.

How are prices and payments presented?

Quotes are provided in pounds sterling and explain guiding, fishing, equipment, transport and payment terms before you commit.

Can you guarantee we will catch fish?

No. Scottish fishing depends on weather, water and wild fish movement. Bill recommends realistic options but never promises a catch.
